According to sources, Rodney King was in good spirits the day of his death. His fiancee, Cynthia Kelley, said King was drinking and smoking marijuana by the pool all day before the events that led to his death. Sunday morning, King was found at the bottom of his Rialito, CA pool. Medics physically removed King from the pool and attempted to revive him, but had no luck.
However, friends close to King say they are questioning his fiancee's story of that morning. Kelley said she went to bed at 2:00AM after spending the day with King and was awoken around 5:00AM by King banging on her window and screaming in the backyard and then heard a big splash in the pool. Friends however are saying she has told that story to multiple friends, but the story changed slightly each time. Rialito PD don't suspect foul play but said they will open a drowning investigation.
King was scheduled for a celebrity boxing match with Jose Canseco in August and was thrilled to be working again and getting back into the ring. He was 47.
