MSU loses appeal and must release police reports to ESPN

(LSJ) Michigan State University will have to release police reports requested by ESPN Inc. after the state Supreme Court denied the school's appeal.

The media company submitted a Freedom of Information Act request in September 2014 for incident reports involving 301 student-athletes. The university responded by providing copies of reports with the names of student-athletes listed as suspects, witnesses or victims redacted, according to court records.

ESPN sued in Ingham County Circuit Court and Judge Clinton Canady III ruled that MSU must release the names of the student-athletes if they were identified in the reports as suspects, according to court records. Canady said privacy laws exempted the release of names if student-athletes were listed as victims or witnesses.

Denzel Valentine Out for 2 to 3 Weeks After Knee Surgery

(LSJ)  Michigan State senior guard Denzel Valentine will be out two to three weeks after going through "extremely successful" arthroscopic knee surgery today, MSU coach Tom Izzo said.

"It's very, very, very minor," Izzo said of a piece of cartilage that had to be removed, after Valentine came down awkwardly from a layup Sunday.

But Izzo also said Valentine is "crushed" to miss time -- including Tuesday's big game between No. 1 MSU (12-0) and Oakland at the Palace of Auburn Hills (7 p.m., ESPNU). A win would give this team the record for the best start in school history.

Izzo compared Valentine's injury to one that MSU's Goran Suton had in the 2008-09 season, costing Suton two weeks.

Izzo said junior guard Eron Harris will start in the place of Valentine against Oakland and that maybe this will be a "shot in the arm" for Harris. He also mentioned possibilities such as freshman Matt McQuaid playing more at shooting guard, and MSU can go bigger -- Izzo said freshman Deyonta Davis had his best practice of the season Sunday.

"We'll be fine," Izzo said. "We've got enough depth, and we've just got to find a way to win a game."

Sports Illustrated get Dantanio's Name Wrong

(Big Ten Network) That “chip on the shoulder” just keeps getting bigger and bigger for Mark Dantonio and the Michigan State Spartans.

Back in August, ESPN misspelled Dantonio’s name on SportsCenter, referring to him as Mike D’Antoni, who was a former NBA head coach, most notably with the Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks.

Now, another mishap on Dantonio’s name has gone viral, this one coming on the cover of this week’s Sports Illustrated.

The SI cover features MSU quarterback Connor Cook with the subhead reading, “How ‘Mike’ Dantonio rebuilt the Spartans.”

Michael Rosenberg, a well-respected reporter who wrote the story, took to Twitter to admit the mistake and inform individuals that SI is re-printing the cover.

By the way, the West Lansing line was a joke.

Three men sought in East Lansing sexual assault

(LSJ)  Police are seeking three men in connection with a reported sexual assault of a Michigan State University student early this morning outside an East Lansing apartment complex.

At least one of the men, all believed to be in their 40s, assaulted the 21-year-old woman at about 2 a.m. inside a red full-sized, box-shaped van parked outside the complex in the 1100 block of West Michigan Avenue, East Lansing police Lt. Scott Wriggelsworth said. Wriggelsworth said it is unclear if the two other men were inside the van or what their roles may have been in the incident.

The victim told police she may have met the men last night at a bar in downtown East Lansing, Wrigglesworth said.

Anyone with information is asked to call East Lansing police at  351-4220.
