2018 Lansing Legend: Kira M. Carter-Robertson

 

Carter-Robertson’s tenure at Sparrow Health System has spanned 18 years in a variety of roles.  Currently she services as the VP, Affiliate Operations, providing system oversight for the Health System’s three community hospitals (Sparrow Carson, Sparrow Clinton and Sparrow Ionia), Post-Acute Care Services (Sparrow Specialty Hospital and Sparrow Community Care) and integration of Hayes Green Beach Hospital.

 

Previously, Carter-Robertson served from 2015 – 2017 as the VP, Post-Acute Care Services of Sparrow Health System, to develop a systemwide post-acute care strategy. In this role, Carter-Robertson provided an overall direction for the operations and strategic development for Sparrow Specialty Hospital and Community Care Services (Home Care, Hospice, Palliative Care, Durable Medical Equipment, Pharmacy Plus, and Wound Center). In addition, she was responsible for the development of strategic partnerships with other post-acute care community providers to ensure a seamless transition of care throughout the system. 

 

Carter-Robertson served from 2006 to 2015 as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Sparrow Specialty Hospital (SSH). The hospital is located within the Tower at Sparrow’s main campus. SSH was designed to treat critically ill adult patients, with an average stay of 25 days. In addition, Carter-Robertson served from 2004 to 2006 as the Chief Operating Officer of Sparrow Specialty Hospital.  During that time, she aided in the opening of the facility.

 

From 2000 to 2004 Carter-Robertson served as Senior Planner at Sparrow Health System, a non-profit, regional tertiary teaching facility. She was responsible for the hospital’s benchmarking tools, trained departments on planning techniques, developed market share and utilization reports to monitor the Health System’s activities, developed a physician supply-and-demand study to assess the needs of the community, assisted departments with business plan development and financial forecasting, and oversaw and assisted the Health System with day-to-day planning needs.

 

Prior to joining Sparrow Health System in 2000, Carter-Robertson spent a year at Trinity Health, located in Farmington Hills, Michigan. Trinity Health developed out of a merger between Mercy Health Services (Farmington Hills, Michigan) and Holy Cross Health System (South Bend, Indiana) and consists of 44 hospitals and dozens of other healthcare organizations in seven states. During her year spent with Trinity Health, she assisted in the closure of a hospital and aided in the development of the current Trinity Health organizational structure.

 

In 2005, Carter-Robertson received the American College of Healthcare Executives Early Careerist award and was nominated as one of the Best, Brightest and Beautiful young careerists in the Greater Lansing Area by New Citizen’s Press. In 2007, Carter-Robertson earned the elite rank of Fellow within the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). In 2008, Carter-Robertson was one of the recipients of the Greater Lansing Business Monthly’s Ten Over the Next Ten Years award and was named as one of Modern Healthcare Magazine’s Up and Comers under the age of 40. Additionally, in 2012, Carter-Robertson received the ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award.

 

Carter-Robertson began her health administration career at Saint Louis University Hospital in 1997. From 1998 to 1999, she assumed various administrator-in-training roles. During this time, she began to acquire her knack for health care and was instrumental in developing a physician referral tracking system at Saint Louis University Hospital and, under her supervision and writing, St. Mary’s Hospital of East St. Louis was awarded a $100,000 grant to open a community clinic. 

 

Carter-Robertson received her Bachelors of Science from the prestigious University of Notre Dame. After undergrad, Carter-Robertson earned a Master's degree in Health Administration from St. Louis University, where she was awarded the Paul R. Donnelly, Ph.D. Academic Achievement award for being the top student in her class, and was inducted into the Alpha Delta Chapter of Delta Omega, an Honorary Society in Public Health.

 

Outside of work, Carter-Robertson is very active both locally and nationally and serves on various community and healthcare-related Boards, to include: YMCA of Metropolitan Lansing Capital (2017- Present); Capital Region Community Foundation (2009-2017); Dart Bank (2012-Present); Great Lakes Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives (2011 – Present); Saginaw Street Corridor Improvement Authority (2011-2014); Lansing Symphony Orchestra (2007-2009); and National Association of Long-Term Acute Care Hospitals (2009-2016). In addition, Carter-Robertson periodically serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Michigan Flint Campus through the Department of Public Health and Health Sciences. On a personal level, Carter-Robertson also enjoys baking and supporting her husband in ministry and missionary work.
