2021 Lansing Legend: Dr. Olivia Letts presented by CATA

 

DR. OLIVIA LETTS COMPLETED HER UNDERGRAD SCHOOLING AT CHICAGO TEACHERS COLLEGE AND HER MASTERS AND DOCTORAL DEGREES FROM MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY.  LETTS IS RECOGNIZED AS LANSING’S FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN ELEMENTARY TEACHER.  SHE TAUGHT THE 5TH AND 6TH GRADES AT LANSING’S FORMER LINCOLN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FROM 1951 TO 1961.  TEN YEARS AFTER HER TIME AT LINCOLN ELEMENTARY, SHE WAS NAMED AS THE CITY’S FIRST BLACK PRINCIPAL AT POST OAK SCHOOL.  DR. LETTS CULMINATED HER CAREER IN THE LANSING SCHOOL DISTRICT AS THE DIRECTOR OF ELEMENTARY EDUCATION.  OLIVIA LETTS AND HER LATE HUSBAND RICHARD LETTS HAVE BEEN OUTSTANDING MEMBERS OF BOTH THE BLACK COMMUNITY AND THE LANSING EDUCATION COMMUNITY FOR MANY YEARS.  RICHARD PASSED IN 1997.  LETTS IS NOW RETIRED AND ENJOYING AN ACTIVE LIFE WITH HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS…
