LG Battery Plant Begins Production in Delta Township; Lansing-Area News Roundup

Production is officially underway at the LG Energy Solution battery plant in Delta Township following a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday attended by local, state and federal leaders.

The approximately $2.5 billion facility covers 2.8 million square feet and is being viewed by state officials as a major investment in Michigan manufacturing. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer called the project a new chapter for the state’s manufacturing industry, citing long-term opportunities and major customers expected to support the facility’s future.

Meanwhile, Lansing Urgent Care says it recently experienced an attempted outside intrusion into its computer network.

According to a statement from the organization, its security protocols and controls detected the threat immediately and shut down the system, preventing access. An initial investigation conducted by Lansing Urgent Care’s internal team and an outside technology provider determined the incident was unsuccessful.

The organization said it does not believe any sensitive patient information was compromised.

In East Lansing, jury deliberations are underway in the involuntary manslaughter trial of David Gaines Jr. of Lansing. Gaines is charged in connection with the death of 20-year-old Caleb Shermoe of Fowlerville outside a restaurant in early 2025.

Prosecutors allege Gaines punched Shermoe in the face before Shermoe later died from his injuries. Gaines has maintained that he acted in self-defense.

New figures are also shedding light on the economic impact of last month’s wildfire smoke that moved into Michigan from Canada.

The East Lansing-based Anderson Economic Group estimates Michigan lost approximately $6.69 billion as a result of the smoke. Across 10 states, the combined economic losses were estimated at more than $38 billion between July 14 and July 20.

In Dearborn, multiple people were arrested Tuesday during an appearance by anti-Islam activist Jake Lang. Supporters of Lang clashed with counter-protesters outside a city council meeting. Police are expected to release additional information about the arrests Wednesday.

And the new school year continues to get underway across the Lansing area. Six more school districts are welcoming students back to class Wednesday: Holt, Leslie, Stockbridge, Williamston, Bath and Olivet.
