Lansing Area News: Restaurant Fire, Hit-and-Run, Crime Ranking and More

Restaurant Fire in Delhi Township

Fire crews responded to a restaurant fire overnight in Delhi Township. The blaze broke out at Gravity Smokehouse on Cedar Street, temporarily closing the northbound lanes as firefighters battled the flames.

No injuries were reported. Officials had not immediately released the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage.

Lansing Hit-and-Run Under Investigation

Lansing police are investigating a hit-and-run after a 60-year-old man was struck by a vehicle shortly before 11 p.m. on Saginaw Street near Frandor.

Authorities had not released the man's condition or information about the vehicle involved or a potential suspect.

Lansing Ranks Among Top 50 U.S. Cities for Violent Crime

Lansing ranked No. 49 among U.S. cities for violent crime in 2025, according to FBI data cited in the newscast.

Lansing was one of six Michigan cities to rank among the nation's top 50. Saginaw ranked No. 2, trailing only Alexandria, Louisiana.

West Lansing Development Gets Brownfield Funding

A development project on Lansing's west side is receiving nearly $500,000 in state brownfield funding.

The project involves environmental concerns at a property in the 2200 block of West Willow. The owner plans to convert a building that has been vacant for eight years into a site for two automotive businesses, with the overall project valued at approximately $2.2 million.

Studio C at Meridian Mall to Close

Studio C at Meridian Mall is preparing to close permanently on October 4.

Celebration Cinema will not extend its soon-to-expire lease. Studio C opened in 2012.

Benson Names Brinks as Running Mate

Michigan Secretary of State and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson announced Wednesday that Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks of Grand Rapids will be her running mate.

The Democratic ticket will face Republican gubernatorial candidate John James and his running mate, Jay DeBoyer, in November.

22 Arrested During Dearborn Demonstrations

Police in Dearborn say 22 people were arrested Tuesday during demonstrations surrounding an appearance by anti-Islam activist Jake Lang.

Police said those arrested ranged in age from 18 to 64 and came from locations across Michigan as well as New York and Tennessee. Charges include breach of peace and/or disorderly conduct. No injuries were reported.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis Reported in Michigan

Michigan health officials have confirmed the state's first reported human case of Eastern equine encephalitis in five years.

The rare but serious mosquito-borne disease was reported in Roscommon County. Mosquito testing and monitoring for EEE are continuing.
