Former Waverly Teacher Sentenced

A former Waverly Community Schools teacher who pleaded no contest to two sex crimes has been sentenced to five months in jail and five years of probation.

According to the morning newscast, 34-year-old Robert Herzing was arrested during a sting operation after communicating with someone he believed was a 15-year-old. The person was actually an Eaton County officer.

Meanwhile, an oil spill caused a temporary road closure Thursday in Charlotte. Cochran Avenue southbound between Shepherd and Fourth streets was closed while authorities addressed the spill. The roadway reopened more than an hour later, although the cause of the spill was not immediately clear.

Aurelius Road to Close for Bridge Replacement

Lansing-area commuters are being warned about an upcoming road closure beginning Monday.

Aurelius Road at the Powlowski Creek culvert is scheduled to close for bridge replacement work. The closure is expected to remain in place through late October, with detours provided for drivers.

MSU Receives $11 Million Donation

Michigan State University has announced an $11 million donation that will help fund development of a lobby entrance and new plazas at campus buildings, as well as support the university's athletic department.

The donation is being provided by MSU alumnus Kirk Faber.

Michigan Receives $145 Million for Passenger Rail

Michigan is receiving $145 million in federal funding aimed at improving passenger rail service across the state.

According to the Michigan Infrastructure Office, the funding will support three projects along the Michigan rail line connecting Chicago with Michigan communities including Detroit, Kalamazoo, Ann Arbor and Jackson.

Projects include replacement of the Blackman Road Bridge in Jackson County, reconstruction of four other railroad bridges in Comstock, Sandstone Charter Township and Superior Charter Township, and track turnout upgrades between Dearborn and Kalamazoo.

Michigan Democrats Prepare for Nominating Convention

Final preparations are underway at the Lansing Center ahead of Saturday's Michigan Democratic nominating convention.

Democrats are expected to formally nominate candidates for the November election, including nominees for lieutenant governor, secretary of state and attorney general.

J.D. Vance Coming to Michigan

Vice President J.D. Vance is scheduled to visit Michigan Monday for an event supporting Republican candidates, including gubernatorial nominee John James and Senate nominee Mike Rogers.

Cyclospora Cases Continue to Rise

Michigan health officials are reporting another increase in cases connected to the state's cyclospora outbreak.

According to the newscast, 233 new cases were reported over the past week, bringing the statewide total to more than 14,500 cases.

Photos of last night's partial lunar eclipse were surfacing across social media in Lansing and other parts of Michigan as residents captured views of the celestial event.

The next total lunar eclipse expected to be visible from Michigan is projected for 2029.
