Vice President J.D. Vance was in the Detroit area Monday campaigning for Republican candidates and responding to comments made by Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed involving Vance's wife and family.

Speaking with Fox News during a stop in Sterling Heights, Vance criticized El-Sayed for bringing family members into political attacks.

Vance said candidates should focus criticism on him rather than his wife, grandmother or other members of his family. He also said he did not know El-Sayed's wife and urged candidates to keep families out of political disputes.

Man Killed in Lansing Rollover Crash

Lansing police have confirmed a 25-year-old man was killed in a rollover crash involving two vehicles Sunday.

The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of North Grand River Avenue and Raymond Drive. Police said the man was found critically injured and later died at the scene.

Investigators believe speed may have been a factor in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.

U.S. 127 Business Route to Close for Culvert Project

Drivers in Clinton County should prepare for a road closure beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8.

A box culvert replacement project will close the U.S. 127 business route between Centerline and Taft roads. The closure is expected to remain in place through early November.

Detours will be posted for motorists traveling through the area.

Preliminary Examination Continues in John Skelton Case

The preliminary examination continued Monday for a Lenawee County man accused of killing his three sons in 2010.

A police officer testified about a wellness check at the home of John Skelton. During the check, investigators found electrical cords that had been cut, along with a noose hanging from an upstairs banister.

The three boys' bodies have never been found.

Citizenship Voting Proposal Heads to U.S. Supreme Court

An emergency appeal has been filed with the U.S. Supreme Court after a proposal seeking to require Michigan voters to prove their citizenship status before voting was blocked from appearing on the November ballot.

The Michigan Board of State Canvassers deadlocked along party lines last week over whether the petition contained enough valid signatures.

The legal challenge now moves to the nation's highest court.

Michigan Reports First 2026 EEE Case in Domestic Animal

Michigan health officials have confirmed the state's first case of Eastern equine encephalitis, or EEE, in a domestic animal in 2026.

The case was identified in a horse in Clare County. Officials said the colt was under-vaccinated and was humanely euthanized.

A human case of the mosquito-borne disease has also been reported this year in Roscommon County.

Health officials continue to urge residents to take precautions against mosquito bites, particularly in areas where EEE has been detected.
