A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting early Wednesday morning on Lansing’s south side.
Lansing police responded to the 600 block of Jolly Road near Cedar Street shortly before 4:30 a.m. after receiving 911 calls reporting a man armed with a handgun who was pounding on doors and windows.
Assistant Lansing Police Chief Eric Pratl said an officer-involved shooting occurred after officers arrived at the scene. The man was pronounced dead.
Police have not yet released the man’s identity.
No Lansing residents or Lansing police officers were injured in the incident. Police say there is no ongoing threat to the public, but drivers are being asked to avoid the area while the investigation continues.
Michigan Supreme Court Orders Re-Sentencing in 1988 Home Invasion Case
Nearly four decades after a violent 1988 home invasion in Diamonddale, the Michigan Supreme Court has ordered 57-year-old David Jones to be re-sentenced.
Jones was 19 when he was convicted and sentenced to 50 to 70 years in prison on several charges stemming from the incident. The re-sentencing is based on a legal precedent established in a separate case involving a teenage murder suspect.
Woman Sentenced for CATA Bomb Threat
A former CATA employee who disrupted bus service with a bomb threat has been sentenced to three years of probation and fined $350.
Nefateria Denise Ferguson, 33, made the threat in April 2025 after a co-worker jokingly suggested making a bomb threat to get out of work, according to investigators.
The threat caused buses to be rerouted away from downtown Lansing, streets near the CATA station to be closed and about 200 employees to be evacuated from CATA offices and the main bus terminal.
East Lansing Businesses Raise Parking Concerns
Business owners in East Lansing are raising concerns about the loss of parking as the privately owned portion of the Bailey Street parking lot is scheduled to close October 2.
The issue comes as Tareen Development Partners continues its lawsuit against the city after the East Lansing City Council rejected plans last July for a housing development on Albert Avenue.
During Tuesday night’s council meeting, one business owner urged the city to work with Tareen Development Partners to resolve the lawsuit while finding a way to preserve public parking for nearby businesses.
Political Campaigning in Detroit
Former Vice President Kamala Harris campaigned Tuesday in Detroit with Democratic Michigan U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed at a maternal health care roundtable.
Harris criticized Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers over health care, claiming Rogers supported legislation that she said would cut Medicaid funding.
Rogers responded by describing El-Sayed as too radical for Michigan and characterized Harris’s visit as “desperate,” according to the newscast.
Michigan Selects Capitol Christmas Tree
State officials have selected this year’s Michigan Capitol Christmas tree.
The Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget selected a 60-foot spruce from Iron Mountain in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
The tree is scheduled to arrive at the Capitol lawn November 7, ahead of the annual tree-lighting ceremony November 20 during Silver Bells in the City.
